The release of an Aamir Khan film is an event in itself. Despite being the most low-key of the three ruling Khans, he is indisputably the most powerful at the box office.
A year on after his previous release Dhoom 3 comes his next film P.K., which will hit the marquee on December 19, coming Friday. The film is set to release on approximately 5000 screens in India and about 820 abroad.
This is possibly the biggest release a film has had in India, and there are reasons for it. ‘PK’ is riding the buzz not just on the shoulders of its talismanic leading man Aamir Khan but also its director Rajkumar Hirani, who’s had an impeccable record of making box office money-spinners.
When Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani’s last film 3 Idiots released, it broke all the box office records and went on to become the highest all-time grosser, a record it held for a very long time.
On top of this Khan-Hirani combo, the subject of ‘PK’ has got everyone curious. Does Aamir Khan play an alien, an oaf, or a nutjob has been anyone’s guess till now. A new promo (watch it here) suggests he plays an alien because he refers to himself as an astronaut.
Aamir Khan and the PK team comprising Anushka Sharma, director Rajkumar Hirani and co-producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra have been promoting the film rather vigorously. Plus a lot of publicity has come through the nude posters and standees that even caused a bit of a controversy.
So the question remains: Will 'PK' be the first Bollywood film to cross the milestone of Rs. 300 crore nett at the Indian box office? Trade pundits feel the film has the potential to go that far.
